The Sangeetha Nilayamu program, a cherished Telugu-language radio show on Lotus FM, has welcomed a fresh voice to its lineup while regular presenter Archana Sridhar is away competing in the 2024 Mrs India Worldwide Pageant in the USA. Taking over for Archana is Purvee Akasam, a dynamic 19-year-old Accounting student from Durban with a rich background in classical dance and music.

Purvee Akasam, currently studying at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), brings a wealth of cultural experience to the show. A Bharatanatyam classical dancer and Carnatic vocal learner, Purvee’s achievements are impressive. She has participated in Telugu and Tamil Eisteddfods at the national level, performed at the Indian Consulate’s cultural events for Independence and Republic Day, and represented KwaZulu-Natal in Dancesport. Her musical talents include achieving full colours for playing the Marimba and winning first place at the South African School Band Association (SASBA) Nationals in October 2023.

Expressing his pride and support, Pravindra Adari, Founder of Prerana, shared, “Purvee Thalli, heartfelt congratulations on your achievement! I am so proud of you. Your determination and hard work have truly inspired me. I sincerely wish for all your future goals to be successful. Thank you for your dedication and commitment. Background on Sangeetha Nilayamu

Sangeetha Nilayamu, which began broadcasting over 18 years ago, has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Telugu culture and language within the South African diaspora and beyond. The show serves as a cultural bridge, enriching the lives of Telugu-speaking communities by offering a deep connection to their heritage through music.

Sangeetha Nilayamu is a vibrant celebration of Telugu heritage. The show showcases a diverse range of Telugu music, including classical Carnatic music, devotional songs like Annamayya Keerthanalu and Thyagaraja Kritis, as well as folk and film songs. This celebration of heritage is crucial for cultural continuity and pride among the Telugu community.

Sangeetha Nilayamu acts as a crucial cultural lifeline for Telugu-speaking communities in South Africa and around the world. For many in the diaspora, especially younger generations growing up outside India, the program provides a vital link to their roots. By featuring traditional Telugu music, the show helps maintain the richness of Telugu cultural expressions, ensuring that these traditions are passed down through generations. This cultural preservation is particularly significant in a multicultural environment where Telugu heritage might otherwise be at risk of fading.

Through the broadcast of Telugu songs, prayers, and cultural narratives, Sangeetha Nilayamu reinforces the importance of maintaining the Telugu language. This promotion of language not only helps preserve it but also encourages younger generations to learn and appreciate their linguistic heritage, even while living in foreign lands. By broadcasting content in Telugu, the show supports the language’s survival and growth.

Empowering Telugu Diaspora

In addition to its cultural and linguistic contributions, Sangeetha Nilayamu provides significant educational value. The program often includes context and explanations of the songs it features, offering listeners insights into the history, meaning, and significance of various musical traditions. This educational aspect of Spoken Telugu lessons presented by Pravindra Adari, enriches the listener's experience, fostering a deeper appreciation of Telugu and inclusion into daily conversations. By educating its audience about the cultural and historical contexts of the music, the show contributes to a greater appreciation of Telugu heritage and encourages ongoing learning and engagement with Telugu culture.

As Archana Sridhar represents South Africa in the Mrs India Worldwide Pageant, the Lotus FM team and the global Telugu community extend their best wishes to her and eagerly await her return.

In the interim, Purvee Akasam’s presence on the next two shows is anticipated to continue the program's tradition of connecting listeners with their cultural roots and enriching their appreciation of Telugu music and traditions. Purvee’s dynamic background and passion for her heritage make her an ideal fit for this role, and her contribution is expected to uphold and enhance the program's mission of cultural preservation and promotion.
