In a remarkable showcase of talent and dedication, the Port Shepstone Andhra Sabha clinched the Composite Trophy at the Telugu Eisteddfod 2024, held on the 10th and 11th of August. The victory marks a significant achievement for the Sabha, which emerged as the overall winner of this prestigious event, highlighting their commitment to preserving and promoting the Telugu language and culture.
Reacting to the win, Mr G Kistamurthy, Chairperson of Port Shepstone Andhra Sabha expressed immense gratitude: "We have to thank Vice Chairperson and Chief Eisteddfod coordinator Saroj Reddy Garu for training the children and recruiting participants for the Eisteddfod. Together with her two children, she ensured that our Sabha was victorious."
The Telugu Eisteddfod by the Andhra Maha Sabha of South Africa (AMSSA), plays a vital role in empowering the Andhra community by encouraging fluency in reading, writing, and speaking the Telugu language. As Seetha Nooki Viranna, Vice President of the organisation emphasized, "The Eisteddfod is a flagship event of the Andhra Maha Sabha. The annual Andhra Eisteddfod is used as a vehicle to promote the Telugu language and culture."
The first Telugu Eisteddfod took place on 6 August 1939 at the Gandhi Library Hall in Queen Street, Durban. Since then, it has grown into a significant cultural and literary festival, drawing participants from across South Africa. The 81st annual event was particularly special, marking a return after a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eisteddfod Convenor, Seetha Nooki Viranna noted the importance of this year’s event, saying, "After the world was hit by COVID, this was a comeback that was definitely missed. With technology evolving in the 21st century, our 81st Eisteddfod allowed participants from different provinces to participate."
The event's second-place composite winner was Andhra Vidhya Sabha, led by Seetha Nooki Viranna. She praised the efforts of all involved, stating, "All the sabhas and online tutors must be complimented and commended for their efforts and camaraderie in ensuring our Eisteddfod was successful."
Isipingo Andhra Sabha secured third place, with their Eisteddfod convenor, Vashen Ramaloo Garu, expressing delight at their unexpected success: "We participated in the 2024 Eisteddfod with no expectations, but our small team achieved remarkable success! I commend our dedicated members and thank AMSSA, officials, and Pravindra Adari for their support, especially with Keethana and Padhyam. Your devotion to promoting Telugu language is truly admirable. We're thrilled to have contributed to reviving the Eisteddfod after the COVID hiatus."
The Telugu Eisteddfod remains a beacon of cultural pride and linguistic preservation. It provides a platform for participants to engage deeply with their linguistic roots, fostering a strong connection with the Telugu language through competitions in poetry, prose, and oratory.
The event also saw the open division won by Pathmajurani Andhra Sabha and the Garuda Vahana Raam Bhajan Group, while the good fellowship award was voted by all Sabhas and won by Port Shepstone & District Andhra Sabha.
Prerana founder Pravindra Adari, whose efforts in promoting the event online were recognized, shared his thoughts: "It was my pleasure to support and encourage our community to participate in the Eisteddfod. AMSSA’s leadership and innovative spirit made it possible for us to come together and celebrate our Telugu heritage, even in a virtual setting."
The Telugu Eisteddfod 2024 not only celebrated the rich heritage of the Telugu community but also showcased the unwavering dedication of participants, organizers, and supporters. As the event concluded, the excitement and anticipation for next year’s Eisteddfod were already palpable, with hopes of even greater participation and success.
