Celebrating A Life Devoted to Telugu Language and Service: Shree Dayanand Naidoo from South Africa

The Telugu community in South Africa mourns the passing of Mr Dayanand Naidoo — a humble teacher, cultural servant, language activist, and devoted son of the Telugu soil. His sudden departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to live in the hearts of countless students, families, and Telugu lovers whose lives he touched through decades of dedicated service.

Born into a family deeply rooted in service to the Telugu language, Mr Dayanand Naidoo inherited not only a love for Telugu, but also a sacred responsibility to preserve it for future generations. His late father, Mr A.J. Naidoo, was among the pioneering figures of the Andhra Maha Sabha of South Africa and worked tirelessly to establish Telugu education and cultural structures during difficult times. Together with stalwarts such as the late Mr D.V. Naidoo, he helped create opportunities for Telugu people in South Africa to remain connected to their language and heritage.

From this rich legacy emerged Mr Dayanand Naidoo — a man who carried the torch forward with dignity and devotion.

For many years, Mr Dayanand Naidoo taught Telugu in Port Shepstone and later in Durban, serving through the Andhra Maha Sabha of South Africa and Reservoir Hills Andhra Sabha. His contribution went far beyond the classroom. He trained children for Eisteddfods, travelled to homes to teach voluntarily, served as an adjudicator, and later became an inspector of Telugu language education. Through every role, he remained committed to ensuring that Telugu would survive and flourish in South Africa.

He belonged to a generation that understood that language is more than communication — it is identity, memory, ancestry, and culture. He often expressed deep concern about the decline of the Telugu language among younger generations in the diaspora. Like many elders who dedicated their lives to language preservation, he worried that Telugu might slowly disappear from homes and hearts outside India.

Yet in recent years, his faith was renewed.

The birth and growth of Prerana Paatashaala brought him immense joy and hope. Seeing children and adults across the world learning Telugu online reignited his belief that the language could still survive and thrive in the diaspora. He watched with pride as students from South Africa, Malaysia, Australia, Mauritius, Canada, America, and beyond embraced Telugu through modern technology and online learning platforms.

Alongside him stood his beloved wife, Mrs Susela Naidoo, who was one of the greatest supporters and admirers of Prerana’s online work. Before her passing on 24 August 2024, she faithfully encouraged the movement through Facebook comments, WhatsApp messages, and YouTube interactions. Her words were always filled with warmth, appreciation, and excitement. She celebrated every achievement, every new lesson, every child learning Telugu, and every milestone reached by the school.

Together, Mr Dayanand and Mrs Susela Naidoo represented something beautiful — a generation that never stopped believing in the importance of preserving one’s mother tongue.

Even in retirement, Mr Dayanand Naidoo remained deeply connected to Telugu literature, devotional music, bhajans, and community life. His quiet dedication inspired many. He did not seek fame or recognition. His reward was seeing Telugu spoken, sung, read, and loved by the next generation.

Today, as we bid farewell to him, we also honour an entire generation of language custodians who sacrificed their time, energy, and personal lives to preserve Telugu identity in South Africa.

The seeds planted by pioneers like Mr A.J. Naidoo and nurtured by servants like Mr Dayanand Naidoo are continuing to bear fruit today through organisations, schools, cultural programmes, and online initiatives such as Prerana Paatashaala.

His life reminds us that language survives when ordinary people choose to protect it with extraordinary commitment. He is survived by his three sons - Krinesh, Koobeshen and Sudesh.

May his soul attain peace at the lotus feet of our Divine Paramathama - Sriman Narayana.

And may future generations remember with gratitude the contributions of the Naidoo family — a family whose name is entrenched in the preservation and propagation of the Telugu language in South Africa.
