"Waves of Devotion: The Timeless Legacy of Sri Krishnalila Tarangini"
On 26 August 2024, as the joyous occasion of Gokulashtami
approaches, Prerana Paatashaala will present a very special program by the
esteemed musician Sri Ramakrishnan on YouTube. This event is set to be a
musical journey, a tribute to the divine compositions of "Sri Krishnalila
Tarangini," a masterpiece that has transcended time, bringing to life the
leelas (playful exploits) of Lord Krishna through the magical confluence of
poetry, music, and dance.
This enchanting dance drama was composed by the illustrious Narayana Teertha during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is a work that not only narrates the enchanting stories of Krishna but also serves as a conduit for deep spiritual devotion, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of its audience.
"Sri Krishnalila Tarangini," meaning "The Stream of Krishna’s Divine Plays," is a Yakshagana-style dance drama that vividly portrays the life of Lord Krishna, from His miraculous birth to His divine wedding with Rukmini. The work is elegantly divided into twelve chapters, known as Tarangams, symbolizing the flowing waves of Krishna's divine pastimes. Within these Tarangams, there are 155 songs of varying lengths, skillfully interwoven with slokas (verses), gadyams (prose passages), and vacanas (dialogues), each resonating with the melodious tunes of 39 different ragas, creating a symphony that captures the essence of devotion.
Narayana Teertha, born as Govinda Sastri in the quaint
village of Kaza in Guntur district, was a child prodigy who displayed an early
proficiency in music and the Shastras (scriptures). From a young age, he was
drawn to the divine, especially to Lord Krishna, whose tales filled him with
profound spiritual longing. This yearning for the divine led him to renounce
the material world and embrace the ascetic life. He was formally initiated into
Sannyasa (monastic life) by Sivarama Tirtha at Kanchipuram and was given the
monastic name "Narayana Teertha."
Narayana Teertha's spiritual journey took him across the
sacred land of India, from the banks of the Ganges in Kashi to the temple towns
of Tamil Nadu. It was in the serene environs of Varahur, at the Sri Venkatesa
Perumal temple in Tanjavur district, that he composed his magnum opus,
"Sri Krishnalila Tarangini." The tranquil atmosphere of Varahur,
coupled with the divine presence in the temple, provided the perfect setting
for Narayana Teertha to immerse himself in the divine leelas of Krishna, which
flowed from his heart like an unceasing stream.
"Sri Krishnalila Tarangini" is more than just a
literary or musical composition; it is a living tradition that continues to
inspire generations. Its influence is evident in the classical dance forms of
Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, where it serves as a rich source for dance dramas
that depict the divine narratives of Krishna. The work’s spiritual depth,
coupled with its artistic brilliance, makes it a timeless treasure that has
been revered and celebrated for centuries.
The legacy of Narayana Teertha and his divine creation,
"Sri Krishnalila Tarangini," is a testament to the power of devotion
and the arts in elevating the human spirit. As we immerse ourselves in the waves of Krishna’s divine plays, we
are transported to a realm where music, dance, and devotion merge into one,
leaving us with a heart full of love and a soul drenched in divine bliss.
Sri Ramakrishnan, the artist at the heart of this special
program, needs no introduction to the Prerana community
since he has been participating in the school’s programs. He is a musician representing the Travancore
school of music. He had the opportunity
to get exposed to Sri Krishnalila Tarangini from his childhood when he had
ample opportunity to listen and participate in South Indian Sampradaya bhajans.
As well known, Sri Krishnalila Tarangini songs, along with songs from
Gitagovinda Mahakavyam of Poet Jayadeva, feature among the mandatory songs in
any South Indian Sampradaya Bhajans. Sri
Ramakrishnan was taught several songs from the work by his father, Sri
Padmanabha Sarma, who not only ensured that he understands the musical aspects
of the songs but also the literary beauty of the work. Sri Ramakrishnan regularly sings songs from
this work during his prayers at home and he firmly believes that it spiritually
elevates him.
As we prepare to celebrate Gokulashtami with this special program, let us immerse ourselves in the waves of devotion that "Sri Krishnalila Tarangini" and Sri Ramakrishnan bring to us.
Jai Sri Krishna – Victory to Lord Krishna
